The Sun Valley Indian School Warriors have earned the No. 2 seed in the Desert Pine Sports League Tournament scheduled on Friday, March 6, at Tonto Basin. The Warriors overpowered Payson Community Christian School 30-6 last Tuesday to take their record to 4-1. PCCS does not have a junior varsity squad, and only fielding five players, the team did not pose a threat to the Warrior junior varsity/second string players. The starters only played a couple of minutes to run their offensive sets, but the second string got most of the playing time. The Warriors’ offense was led by Eligle Begay with 8 points. A total of eight players scored. Two days later, both the varsity and jayvee Warriors improved to 5-1 with wins over Sequoia Charter School of Show Low. The varsity continued to impress, winning 33-8. The score wasn’t even that close, as the offensive concepts were to prepare for the possible rematch in the championship against St. Anthony’s of Show Low. Led by Levander Dewey with 16 and Carlton Nez with 11, SVIS showed why it has earned a top seed. In their last game, the junior varsity Warriors earned a decisive victory, 24-15. Led by Begay with 8 points, they attacked all game. The defense stole the show, as Heavyn Halwood got steal after steal to eliminate any possibilities of a comeback.
