Three of the six first place awards given at the cross country meet held last Thursday at Vernon went to Sun Valley Indian School. The junior varsity earned first place as a team. The school also received the top girl awards by Jessica and Andrea Villalba, who finished second and fifth. While SVIS’ 12th place runner Shivanna Jake didn’t place, she has improved every week. She began in the 20s and might just make an appearance in the top three girls in this week’s championship race. The varsity also earned the top individual award for boys and overall went to Levander Dewey. Sharadee Sands was bumped up to varsity and placed second and 17th overall for girls. The team was missing two runners who normally place second and third on the team due to academic reasons, and finished with more points at 87, but fourth nonetheless. They had their work cut out for them at the championships planned Thursday at SVIS to gain top awards. They were in the running for all six first place awards, but the travel trophy, one that began with SVIS, only goes to the varsity team that wins first place.
