Holbrook’s Lady Roadrunners defeated Snowflake for the third time this season Tuesday night in Show Low in the first sectional semifinal game. The Roadrunners didn’t play well, but the end result was a 71-51 win over the Lady Lobos, advancing Holbrook to the sectional title game tonight (Feb. 13) against Winslow. Teyah Goldtooth shot the ball well in the first period, connecting on 13 of Holbrook’s 18 opening quarter points. In the second Laurie Brown hit her second three-point shot and added a field goal, helping the Roadrunners preserve a 28-22 halftime lead. Cheyenne Lester gave the team an early spark in the third period as she connected on one three and scored three more the old fashioned way. Rochelle Nez also netted six in the period, giving the Birds a tentative 48-39 lead going into the fourth. In the final stanza, Holbrook ventured to the free throw line 21 times, making good on 17 of those tries to pull away for the 20-point win. Goldtooth led the Holbrook offense with 19 points. Brown and Nez added 14 each. Cheyenne Lester connected for 6; Quanyyah Lester, 5; Dishie Kinlicheenie, 4; Tyler Pacheco and Twyla Clark, 3 each; Ariyana Pratt, 2; and Summer Olney, 1. The Roadrunners made seven three point field goals and went 24 for 32 at the charity stripe. Snowflake was led by Kadi Johnson and Melissa Eich with 12 points each. Marisa Godfrey added 10; Tycee Coplan, 5; Tori Flake and Elle Flake, 4 each; and Macie Rawlins and Audrey Livingston, 2 each. The Lobos hit two three-point shots and went 19 for 33 at the free throw line. “We really didn’t play well. Credit Snowflake for causing some of that, but some of our girls really played below the level we have been accustomed to,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “We got into early foul trouble with our guards and just couldn’t overcome that for most of the game. I thought we were flat and too many of the girls were watching the game on the floor instead of playing the game. “We certainly need to fix that before Friday night’s game with Winslow and for the state tournament next week if we want to advance very far. These girls can get the job done, but it will take a better effort from here on out to win games.” Holbrook improved to 23-7 with the win and will face Winslow in the title game at 7 o’clock tonight at Show Low High School. The Lady Bulldogs took care of Alchesay in the other semifinal contest on Tuesday night. The Division III state tournament begins on Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Prescott Valley. The boys’ state tournament gets underway on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
