The number of signatures required to recall Holbrook Mayor Merrill Young have been approved by the Navajo County Recorder’s Office, with 131 of the 152 signatures submitted accepted. The 21 signatures that were not accepted were not signed properly or lacked a physical address to go with the signature. A total of at least 123 were required for a recall.
According to City Clerk Lisa Hunt (her name was incorrectly noted as Lisa Maestas in last week’s article). Mayor Young was notified on March 31 of the results and if he chose not to step down from his position by the end of the day on Tuesday, April 5, a special recall election shall be issued on the April 14 council meeting and shall be held on the next consolidated election, which is Aug. 9. The mayor will then have the right to prepare and have printed on the ballot a 200-word statement defending his official conduct.
If Mayor Young chooses to challenge the number of signatures certified by the county recorder, he must take action in Navajo Superior Court within 10 calendar days after receiving notification. The superior court decision may be appealed to the state supreme court within 10 calendar days after judgement.
In addition, six council packets were submitted as of Monday morning with the deadline 5 p.m. that day. As of press time six packets were submitted, from Robert Black, Barbara Blyth, Arcenia Pacheco, Karina Pack, Kristi Patterson and Councilman Adam Marsh
