The Holbrook Unified School District (HUSD) No. 3 Governing Board met last Tuesday, during which the board approved Performance Matters as a new assessment system for grades 1-12. The assessment system will replace Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) that is currently being used for benchmark assessments.
Holbrook High School (HHS) Principal Clete Hargrave explained why HUSD principals recommend the switch to Performance Matters. “In our quest to better serve our students, we know that one of the top strategies for increasing student learning is data driven instruction. And to become more data driven, we felt that NWEA wasn’t giving us all the tools we needed to analyze the data and respond to student needs.”
Hargrave stated that data driven instruction focuses on four levels, student level analysis, class level analysis, standard analysis and question level analysis. NWEA MAP focuses on those first two levels, but not all four. “We weren’t able to get the other two, which was standard analysis, really targeting what specific skills students were perhaps deficient in. Then also looking at question level analysis, which question did they miss? What do those questions look like? Maybe, what answer choice were they selecting? What is the misunderstanding and how we can correct that misunderstanding?”
Performance Matters will allow teachers to analyze all four levels to see how students are performing as well as make more informed instructional decisions.
Performance Matters is directly linked to the Beyond Textbooks Arizona State Standards system currently being used by HUSD and will allow teachers to develop standards-based benchmark assessments throughout the school year. Hargrave also stated that Performance Matters allows teachers to make their own assessments. The system is a three-year contract, with a $30,000 start up cost, which includes training for teachers, then an annual $18,000 cost.
In addition, the board designated Power School Group, LLC as sole source provider for the Performance Matters benchmarking system.
Superintendent Dr. Robbie Koerperich stated the transition to Performance Matters would start the following day.
