Students from Jefferson Elementary School in Winslow welcomed riders from around the country at the annual Run For The Wall riders as they made their way through downtown Winslow and Holbrook. The children and many others lined the streets and waved flags in support of veteran motorcyclists along their route to Washington.

Since 1989, motorcycle riders from around the United States have made this cross-country trek dubbed Run For The Wall. Founded by Vietnam veterans James Gregory and Bill Evans, the mission of the run is to bring awareness to and pay respect to those missing in action or killed in the war, and to promote healing among all veterans and their families.

The Run For The Wall begins in Ontario, Calif., and heads across America for 10 days, culminating at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, D.C. Participants include veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan, active duty military, supporters, friends and family. Everyone is welcome, veterans and non-veterans alike.

Each year, riders of all ages travel through host cities where they are welcomed by parades, flag wavers and welcome home receptions. For more information about The Run or the cause, go online to www.rftw.us
