The Roadrunners dropped their first game at the Round Valley Tournament last week, but stormed back to win five straight to claim the tournament championship on Saturday evening.

Holbrook fell to Alchesay 50-49 on Thursday afternoon as the Falcons rallied late in the fourth to get the one-point win. Alec Smith led the Roadrunners in scoring with 11 points, including three treys.

Holbrook’s second game on Thursday night was a hard fought, physically played 53-32 win over St. Johns. Marlin Martin led the Birds’ offense with 16 points. Sylas Chevarillo, Nathan Johnson and Marcel Young added 8 each.

The Roadrunners wrapped up pool play on Friday morning with a 42-27 win over Thatcher. Martin again led the team in scoring with 12, hitting a pair of three-point shots.

Holbrook faced Round Valley on Friday evening and easily dispatched the host team 53-27. Martin reached double figures with 18. Miireux Begaii added 9, Young, 8, and Chevarillo, 6.

That win put the Roadrunners into the semifinal round, where they met Thatcher for the second time in two days. This game was closer, but Holbrook again prevailed 52-40 to advance to the title game. Martin connected on four treys for 12 points. Begaii added 11 and Abrian Dickson hit a pair of treys for 6.

In the championship game Holbrook met up with Show Low. The Roadrunners defeated the Cougars by two points in the first game of the regular season. The title game was nearly as close. Holbrook built a six-point lead in the first half, then after giving up the lead early in the second half, the Birds fought back and patiently attacked Show Low’s zone defense until they eventually pulled out a 46-40 win. Martin again led the team in scoring with 16 points. Dickson, Begaii and Young each added 6 in the win.

Marlin Martin and Mirreux Begaii were named to the all tournament team.

With the five wins the Roadrunners improved their overall record to 11-4 heading into this week’s action. They were slated to host Valley Sanders on Monday night and will play at Ganado on Thursday, Dec. 18, in their final action prior to the holiday break.
