Football Holbrook

By Greg Perkins Several things fell just right for Holbrook on Friday night. With the Roadrunners idle for the week due to a previous opponent’s cancellation, the Birds found themselves scoreboard-watching instead of playing. One of the scores that really mattered was the outcome of the Alchesay and St. Johns game. The Redskins, who dominated Holbrook just last week, were expected by most to take care of business with Alchesay and win the region. The Falcons had other plans and upset St. Johns 38-35 forcing a three-way tie for the 2A Little Colorado Region crown. Since all three teams: Holbrook, St. Johns and Alchesay had identical 2-1 region records and had all beat each other, the AIA tiebreaker system went to which team was ranked higher in power points. Holbrook finished ranked ninth, St. Johns 11th, and Alchesay 13th, giving Holbrook the tiebreaker and the region title. The region title does not guarantee a first round home game, thus the Roadrunners will travel to take on the Cowboys in Wilcox on Friday. The ninth seeded Roadrunners will have to hit the road to face eighth seeded Wilcox on Friday. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m., but due to the long trip school officials are hoping to move the kickoff up to a 5 p.m. start allowing fans and players to return to Holbrook a little earlier. The Cowboys played in a much tougher region than did Holbrook. They finished fourth in the 2A San Pedro region with a 7-2 overall record. The three region teams ahead of them are Benson, Morenci and Pima. Those teams are seeded third, fourth and seventh respectively in the bracket. Wilcox went 7-0 to start the season but dropped their last two games, one to Morenci 10-27, and last week’s 0-35 shutout loss to Benson. They don’t really have an impressive signature type win in their seven victories. Holbrook has the ability to win this game if they can overcome a five-hour bus ride and take better care of the ball than they did vs St. Johns. The winner of this game will get the pleasure of an even longer road trip to Parker to take on the top seeded Broncs next Friday. Parker is highly favored to win the 2A title this year and is unbeaten. They are hosting 16th seeded Red Mesa and will roll to an easy win.
