By Greg Perkins Holbrook’s football game in Kingman against Lee Williams started well enough for the Birds, but after early success, the Roadrunners were shut down the rest of the game suffering their second straight defeat to open the season 0-2. Cade Maestas’s 19-yard touchdown run midway through the first period followed up by Ty Foard’s point after boot gave Holbrook the initial lead of the game. That lead held through the first period but in the second the Volunteers started mounting their comeback. Lee Williams tied the game up on a two yard touchdown run early in the second period and the teams went to the half knotted at 7-7. Three minutes into the third period the Volunteers moved on top with a 55-yard scoring run. The point after missed but Holbrook trailed 13-7. Holbrook’s offense struggled in the second half, and Lee Williams put together a long scoring drive punctuated near the five minute mark with a 3-yard run extending their lead to 19-7. Lee Williams scored again near the five minute mark of the fourth period on a five yard run posting the final points of the game avenging last year’s win by the Roadrunners with a 26-7 victory. Holbrook didn’t have a great night on offense totaling only 171 yards. Eighty-eight of those yards came on the legs of sophomore quarterback Cade Maestas on 13 rushes. Maestas also completed five of seven passes for 32 yards. Julian Garcia rushed eight times for 16 yards, Danny Gonzales rushed four times for 10 yards, Wazuri Waits gained three yards on his only carry and Darrin Tyler lost five yards with his only attempt. Ryan Short completed one of five passes for 19 yards. Scottie Gishie made two catches for 21 total yards, Danny Gonzales caught two for 11 yards, Christian Pierce had one reception for 19 yards and Waits had one caught for no gain. Jedde Bowman led Holbrook’s defense with 17 tackles and Foard followed that with 10 takedowns. Waits had his second interception in as many games. At 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, the Roadrunners will host a Wilcox team that, like Holbrook, has started the season with two losses with neither game being competitive.
