Holbrook earned a split last week, dropping one on the road at Alchesay on Tuesday night then bouncing back with a hot shooting game vs Blue Ridge on Friday night.
Playing in Whiteriver on Tuesday, Holbrook started well with 18 points through the first eight minutes. Three-point shots from Brayden Smith and Manny Gurrero, along with six traditional points from Amare Nelson gave Holbrook a 6-point edge.
In the second, the Falcons pulled within 1 point thanks to a 20-point quarter. Holbrook got 8 more from Nelson and held on to a 33-32 lead at the break.
The Falcons large fan base came to life in the third where they outscored Holbrook 16-9 and continued into the fourth with the Roadrunners managing just 7 points in what ended with a 65-49 Alchesay win.
Nelson led Holbrook with 16 points. Manny Guerrero added 12 on four treys. Smith had 9, Manny Rico 7, Travis Bia 4, and Braylon Taliman helped with 1.
Holbrook made seven 3-point field goals and went 10 for 17 at the line. The Falcons countered with six treys and went 8 for 20 at the charity stripe.
Hosting Blue Ridge on Friday night, Holbrook scorched the nets from distance making 14 3-point shots. Blue Ridge added 6 of their own. With both teams firing from long range, only four total free throws were shot in the contest.
Holbrook led 18-11 after the first behind a pair of treys each by Guerrero and Rico. In the second, Smith connected on three treys as did Nelson, giving Holbrook a 28-point quarter and a 46-25 halftime lead. Three more from distance in the third and one final trifecta in the fourth led to the 73-39 home court win for the Roadrunners.
Nelson led with 17. Rico added 15; Bia, 13; Taliman, 11; Smith, 9; Guerrero, 6; and Brady Becenti added 2.
Holbrook hit 14 shots from behind the arc and made 1 of 2 free throws. Blue Ridge had only six 3-pointers and went 1 for 3 at the line.
If the Roadrunners can shoot that well again in front of what is expected to be a sell-out crowd with Alchesay on Tuesday in Holbrook, they could potentially earn an east region title depending on what happens in the rest of the region over the final two days of the season.
Holbrook will wrap up the regular season at Blue Ridge on Wednesday night. The Birds will for certain be in the postseason, but with the Copper format muddling everything up their opponent won’t be known until Saturday.
Holbrook heads into the final week of the regular season ranked 11th in the 3A Power points. They will host No. 18 Alchesay on Tuesday, then travel to No. 25 Blue Ridge on Wednesday night.
Holbrook is 16-5 overall and 10-3 in conference play.
