Competing in the Show Low Invitational dual meet held over the weekend Holbrook’s wrestlers finished tied for fifth in the dual portion of the meet. Show Low placed first, followed by Morenci, Winslow, Sunrise Mountain, and Sandra Day O’Connor and Holbrook.

The Roadrunner squad collected wins over Payson, 45-21, St. Johns, 42-26, River Valley, 51-24, X-Team, 45-30, and Blue Ridge, 57-15, and fell to Morenci, 65-9, and Sunrise Mountain, 46-30. Holbrook finished tied with Sandra Day O’Connor, 33-33, but took the loss due to scoring criteria.

Individually, Shane McGraw went 8-2 to finish second.

Mac Stump and Adriano Sam finished fourth with 7-3 records.

Levi McClellan went 7-2 to place fifth. Noah Barela also placed fifth with a 6-3 record.

Holbrook wrestlers who did not place were Hershel Skeet, who went 2-6; Kohl Potts, 4-4; Darrin Tyler, 5-3; Ezra Joe, 1-6; Jedde Bowman, 4-4; Dre Hanley, 3-5; and Sam Sumpter, 4-4.

“Overall, I was happy with our performance. In several of the duals we were down 18-0 right away because we have three open weight classes,” said Coach John Bokker.

“There was some tough competition and the guys wrestled hard. Noah Barela, Levi McClellan, Mac Stump, Shane McGraw and Adriano Sam did a great job in the individual tournament, as well. Shane wrestled hard and ended up only losing to the same guy from Morenci, who was a returning state champion, twice.

“The season is halfway over and we have a lot more work to do.”

On Wednesday of last week the Roadrunners hosted three teams in a four-way multiple meet and swept all three opponents. Holbrook defeated Flagstaff, 42-33, Blue Ridge, 57-15, and Chinle, 54-10.
