By Greg Perkins Last week was a rough one on the hardwood for the Holbrook Roadrunners. They dropped three straight games to Winslow, Snowflake and Valley Christian. Fortunately, their schedule now becomes more favorable with the exception of another game at Winslow on Saturday night, Jan. 23. Hosting the Bulldogs this last Wednesday, Holbrook played well early, building a 32-21 halftime cushion. Eight of the Birds’ 11 first-half field goals came from behind the three-point line with Benson Davis and Abrian Dickson each hitting three. In the third quarter Winslow trimmed all but one point off the lead, holding Holbrook to just an eight-point effort. The Roadrunners made just six shots in the second half, three each the third and fourth periods, and couldn’t compile enough points to hold off a pesky Bulldog team. Following three free throws from Rhett Desiderio, Holbrook trailed by just one inside the final minute. The Birds had one final chance late in the game, but a timeout they didn’t have was called, resulting in technical free throws for the Bulldogs, which they nailed, making the final score 56-53 in favor of Winslow. Dickson led the team in scoring with 15 points, followed by Nathan Johnson with 14; Davis, 11; Miireux Begaii, 8; Desiderio, 3; and Elliot Pete, 2. On Friday night the Roadrunners met up with the defending champion Lobos in Snowflake. This time Holbrook was the one with a slow beginning. The Birds found themselves trailing by six after one and by 15 at the half. They battled back in the third, outscoring the home team by 11 points, but still trailed by three heading to the fourth. In the final stanza Desiderio nailed four three-point bombs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a balanced attack by the Lobos, who won the game 65-58. Dickson led Holbrook with 27 points. Desiderio added 15, all on three-point shots. Begaii scored 7; Pete, 4; Johnson, 3; and Brandon Kester, 2. At the end of a long bus ride to Valley Christian on Saturday lay a 56-37 loss to the Trojans. The Roadrunners scored just 12 points in the first half, but still only trailed by 11. In the third that deficit grew larger. In the fourth the Birds managed to get as close as six points before the Trojans took care of things down the stretch. Dickson led the Holbrook offense with 14 points, followed by Desiderio and Begaii with 7 each; Davis, 5; and Johnson, and Pete with 2 each. The Roadrunners entered Tuesday’s home game with Tuba City ranked 17th in power points with a record of 7-4. Overall they are 17-6. Following Tuesday’s game they will play at Winslow on Saturday, Jan. 23. On Monday, Jan. 25, they travel to Flagstaff to play Northland Prep, then they host Window Rock on Wednesday, Jan. 27.
