Football Holbrook

By Greg Perkins As expected, the Roadrunners had little problems handling visiting Hopi on Senior Night on Saturday evening in Holbrook. Holbrook came into the contest ranked third in the 2A power points while the Bruins were 43rd out of the 44 teams in 2A. The Roadrunners posted 25 points in the first period, then added another 26 in the second to lead 51-6 at the half. Hopi notched their six points on a pick six off a Marcus Oberriter aerial in the second quarter. With the running clock in play the entire second half, the Roadrunners scored just once in each the third and fourth periods leading to a 63-6 win. The win should keep the Birds ranked inside the top four in the standings heading into what will be another ho-hum week for them as they prepare to host Valley Sanders on Saturday. The Pirates are currently the 40th ranked team in 2A with their lone win being an eight-point victory over winless Hopi. Oberriter completed eight of 16 passes for 164 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Izzy Ramos completed his only pass for 11 yards. Ramos was also the favored receiver with four catches for 68 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Mason Archunde had two grabs for 57 yards. Chase Sahmie had two for 36 and a score. Kyle Smith had one 14-yard touchdown reception. On the ground, Daniel Montijo had a solid night, picking up 132 yards on just six runs with a score. Oberriter gained 80 yards on six totes scoring twice. Caden Tom carried twice and scored twice. Mason Archunde had four carries for 24 yards, Noah Padilla rushed five times picking up 19 yards, and Kalub Trujillo had six carries for 21 yards. This week the Roadrunners will face another struggling 2A team. The Pirates have just one win and will be no match for Holbrook. The Birds need to get through the game healthy and look ahead to their region title game, which will be played in St. Johns in two weeks. The Redskins will be the best team Holbrook has seen since the Winslow game, which marks their only loss of the season against six wins. With an expected win over Valley on Saturday, the Roadrunners will solidify their spot in the 2A state playoffs. The St. Johns game would be a huge determining factor if Holbrook will get a chance to host a playoff game on Nov. 5.
