Holbrook dominated winless Red Mesa on Friday night, pushing their season record to 4-0 with a 54-0 shutout over the Redskins.

The Roadrunners opened the game with younger players starting and freshmen Darren Justman hooked up with classmate Simeon Shaw at the 3:54 mark of the first period on a 34-yard catch and run putting the Birds up 6-0.

Justman hooked up with Darnell Nez for a 50-yard scoring toss making the lead 14-0 with a two-point toss to Shaw with 1:30 left in the period.

Facing a third and 25 from their own 35-yard line Justman stepped up into the pocket and fired a pass downfield hitting a streaking Shawn in stride for a touchdown pushing the lead to 20-0. The freshmen combo hooked up again for the two-point conversion making the score 22-0 with 9:29 left in the half.

With Holbrook’s usual starters in the game, it didn’t take long for Daniel Montijo to score on a two-yard run. Marcus Oberriter found Kyle Smith for the two-point conversion making the lead 30-0. Oberriter then picked up a Red Mesa fumble and returned it 28 yards for the scoop and score. The two-point conversion pass from Oberriter to Smith pushed the lead to 38-0. Oberriter then cruised down the right sideline for a 45-yard run pushing the lead to 46-0 with the two-point pass to Chase Sahmie. The final points of the half and the game came from special teams when Taedon Cowboy recovered a Red Mesa fumble on the kickoff and returned it into the endzone making the score 54-0 at the half.

Neither team scored in the half with Coach Holley getting several different players involved in the offense.

Justman completed six of 10 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Oberriter was one for one for 15 yards and Montijio completed one pass.

Oberriter led all rushers with 46 yards on one carry. Darnell Nez gained 41, Maven Begay 32, Larin Nez 20, Mauricio Baca 13, Izack Wilson 7, and Daniel Montijo gained a single yard on one run.

Mathias Montijo led the defense with six tackles. Oberriter, Taedon Cowboy, and Tristian Cowboy each recovered a Red Mesa fumble.

This week Holbrook will travel to Chinle to face an improved Wildcat team that is still searching for its first win of the season. Last week they fell to St. Johns 38-28. In the first week of the season Chinle lost to Winslow by four points. Roadrunner fans should expect the Birds to improve to 5-0 on Friday night in Chinle.
