Football Holbrook

The Roadrunners accomplished something they hadn’t done in at least a decade when they defeated visiting St. Johns 20-13 on Friday night. Holbrook took the opening possession and moved right down the field capping a long drive with a Marcus Oberriter touchdown run. The two-point conversion put Holbrook on top 8-0.

Holbrook moved on top 14-0 with the first of Daniel Montijo’s two touchdown runs early in the second period. St. Johns cut into the lead late in the second leaving Holbrook on top 14-6 at the break.

Montijo’s second scoring run came in the third and gave Holbrook a little breathing room at 20-6. St. Johns made a late run scoring midway through the fourth making it a 20-13 game with the PAT kick. Holbrook was able to hold on down the stretch to win the game and more than likely claim the region 2A Little Colorado Region title in the process. There are still two games remaining but Holbrook will be heavily favored in both contests against Valley and Hopi.

Oberriter finished the night completing 18 of 30 passes for 181 yards. Izzy Ramos had six catches for 54 yards; Chase Sahmie, three for 45; Tristian Cowboy, two for 38; Daniel Montijo, three for 25; and Kyle Smith had two for 18 yards.

Holbrook improved to 8-0 with the win. They were ranked fourth in the 2A rankings heading into the game. The Roadrunners should stay in that position when the rankings come out this week. Each of the three teams above them also won on Friday night. Scottsdale Prep was ranked fifth and could pass the Birds in the rankings by the end of the season even if both teams continue to win their final two games due to having a tougher overall schedule.
