The Roadrunners earned a split in their two matches played last week improving their overall volleyball rankings to the 25th position heading into this week. Playing in Payson on Tuesday, Holbrook struggled against the eighth ranked Longhorns, returning home with a 0-3 loss.
Things improved against rival Winslow on Thursday evening. Hosting the Lady Bulldogs during homecoming week, Holbrook won the first game of the match 25-22. Winslow bounced back to win the second game by a similar score. Both teams were fairly evenly matched with the Bulldogs getting some impressive kills by their star outside hitter Justine Butterfield.
Holbrook went on to win the pivotal third game of the match in another close battle. The fourth and final game saw the Roadrunners move out in front and easily close out the match with a 25-14 win. Holbrook’s Matehya Aberle had several nice kills at the middle of the net helping her team pick up just their second regular season win of the season.
With the loss Winslow saw their regular season match record fall to 3-6 leaving them ranked 22nd at the onset of this week. The Bulldogs played at Blue Ridge on Tuesday, then will host Payson on Thursday. Next Monday they will play at Show Low followed by a home court match up with highly ranked Snowflake next Tuesday.
Holbrook’s win over the Bulldogs will hopefully give them some momentum as they head into a tough week. After playing at second ranked Snowflake on Tuesday, the Lady Roadrunners will host Blue Ridge today (Wednesday) then will travel to Chinle for a double header match on Saturday. Holbrook is currently 2-6 in regular season matches.
