By Greg Perkins The Roadrunners entered their regular season finale at home vs Page needing to win and get quite a bit of outside help in order to qualify for the 3A state tournament. Unfortunately, they didn’t take care of the first part of that process, falling to the Sand Devils, 60-51 on Tuesday night at Munoz Gym. Brandon Tapaha and Noah Brown combined for 11 of Holbrook’s 13 first period points keeping them within three of the visitors. Tapaha added his third and fourth treys in the second period as the Birds trailed by five at the half. Page slowly built their lead in the third despite four from Nick Begay and four more from Brown. In the final eight minutes, the Sand Devils pulled away to secure the nine point win and officially send the Roadrunners into the off-season. One bright spot for coach Johnson is that of his team’s 51 points in the game all but four were scored by underclassmen, giving the Roadrunners a positive base to build from for next season. Tapaha led with 15; Brown added 13; Begay, 8; Quentin Thomas, 7; Heavyn Halwood, 4; and Damon Attakai finished with 2. The Birds made seven treys, five by Tapaha, and went 6 for 8 at the line. Page was led by their 6’9” center Stuart Sandoval with 24 points. They had three long range field goals and went five for seven at the line. With the loss, Holbrook ends their season with an overall record of 6-10.
