By Greg Perkins Holbrook’s football season came to a close on Friday night in Gilbert where their offense clicked but defensively, they continued to struggle in a 64-48 final game loss to the Arete Prep Chargers. Holbrook found the endzone twice in the first period, but gave up 29 points to the home team. Both teams played even in the second leaving the Roadrunners still in the game with a 43-26 half time deficit. Arete Prep who had just one victory this year, padded their lead in the third then held off a bit of a Holbrook rally in the fourth, picking up their second win of the season. Statistically Holbrook piled up the yards and the points in the loss. Marcus Oberriter complete 12 of 20 passes for 120 yards, with three touchdowns. Izzy Ramos was his favorite target with five receptions for 83 total yards and a pair of scores. Kyle Smith made two catches for 20 yards with a score. John O’Brien had two catches for 16 yards, and Kalub Trujillo had two receptions totaling three yards. Holbrook’s rushing attack was even more potent with the team counting 560 rushing yards. Oberriter carried 16 times for a total of 209 yards. John O’Brien rushed 15 times gaining 169 yards and Ramos also eclipsed the century mark with 136 yards on seven attempts. Smith carried six times gaining 46 yards. Holbrook’s defense was led by O’Brien with eight tackles. Oberriter, and Ramos each had seven stops. Mauricio Baca and Caden Tom both made four tackles. Baca also had two quarterback sacks. Holbrook closes out the season with a winless mark at 0-5. Having to start the season late and having one game cancelled left the program two games short of what most teams had scheduled this season. Several AIA schools had to cancel games throughout the season due to COVID. Holbrook has a young core of players who gained a lot of experience returning for next year. Hopefully next year’s football season will be a little more traditional than the 2020 COVID version was this year.
