By Greg Perkins With both Holbrook soccer teams not beginning practice until Sept. 14, they are both playing limited schedules this season. The Ladies’ team has played three matches thus far including Saturday afternoon’s 8-0 home field loss to Round Valley. Holbrook played tough through the first 30 minutes of the match but the Elks eventually broke through to lead 4-0 at the break. Round Valley added four more goals in the second half to get the win. Holbrook’s goalie Samara Kennedy stopped multiple Elk shots on goal in the loss. The team will play at St. Johns on Tuesday and they will host Payson at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Holbrook’s boys team is off to a slow beginning with an 0-2 record. Hosting Snowflake on Wednesday last week, Holbrook played tough through the first 20 minutes of the match despite being one man down to begin with due to low numbers on the team this year. That deficit along with Snowflake’s play began to show midway through the first half. With the Lobos lead 5-0, Josh Pack scored Holbrook’s first and only goal thus far this season in what eventually became an 11-1 loss. The following day Holbrook was in Show Low where they fell 8-0. The Roadrunners again played well early and trailed by just two goals at the half. In the second half, the Cougars pulled away with six goals to end the match. Holbrook will play at Blue Ridge on Wednesday, then will have a week off to prepare for a road match at St. Johns.
