Peterson resigned suddenly after serving on the council for the past nine years, serving this past year as vice mayor. Peterson did not provide a reason but noted in a letter dated June 4 that his resignation would go into effect June 10, which was one day prior to the most recent council meeting. In the meeting prior to his resignation, Peterson had expressed interest in continuing as vice mayor but Councilwoman Francie Payne garnered a majority of the votes. Peterson had also agreed at that meeting to the alternate council representative to the NACOG (Northern Arizona Council of Governments).
