A Phoenix man is in custody following an armed robbery at the Woody’s store in Holbrook on Monday, Jan. 30.
According to Detective Mario Parra of the Holbrook Police Department, Sherwin John, 20, entered the store at 11:45 p.m. and held the store clerk at gunpoint while he took cash from the register and grabbed a bottle of alcohol, then ran out.
An anonymous tip led officers to a residence a half a block from the store where John was found. John reportedly confessed to the crime after his Miranda rights were read to him, stating that he needed the money because he was having difficulty paying his bills.
John was charged with theft, armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two warrants. He was booked into the Navajo County Jail in Holbrook.
Detective Parra said the cash taken totaled $113. He also noted that the weapon used in the crime looked like a real pistol, but was actually a pellet gun.
