City of Holbrook1

The Holbrook City Council convened on March 11, in the absence of Vice Mayor Francie Payne and Councilman Tim Dixon who were excused, during which the council approved the renaming of Hidden Cove Park to O’Dell Hidden Cove Park, in honor of beloved local Mike O’Dell, who recently passed.

O’Dell’s sister, Robin Gonzales, spoke to the council during call to the public thanking them for all they have done and imploring that they maintain the work done by O’Dell. “I just want you to know that his biggest concern was to preserve and protect this beautiful sacred land,” Gonzales stated. She specifically pointed out his work to maintain the local cemetery. “He treated every plot in that cemetery with the same respect he did his own family members that are there. My hope and request are that the city will continue to do all that is possible and needed to fill the void that he has a now left us.”

Golf Course Superintendent Steve Rutherford gave an annual report stating that the greens on the course have been struggling but he hopes for full recovering in June or July. He also mentioned some repairs that still need to be made, such as the clubhouse being unusable, and the restrooms that are to be remodeled in the next month or so. “Our cart paths are worn a bit; they need some rejuvenation and we have plans on doing that,” Rutherford added. He also mentioned experiencing some problems with gophers on the course and the road to the course being in poor quality.

“This next year I’m going to develop a SWOT plan. It’s strength, weakness, opportunity and threats to the golf course,” stated Rutherford, along with mentioning future needs of the park, which included replacing trees and purchasing more equipment. “I would like, in the future, consideration for more equipment for maintaining the grass like digging equipment and trenching equipment”.

As part of the agenda, a request was made for the purchase of a Groundsmaster 3300 4WD rough mower for the golf course in the amount of $34,999, which was approved.

The council also approved the sale of real property noted as Parcel Number 403-05-235, legal description: Ranch of the Golden Horse No.1, Lot 113, Block 3 in Snowflake to Samuel Pirog.
