During last week’s Holbrook Council meeting, City Clerk Lisa Hunt provided the council with notice that a recall election for office of mayor will be held in conjunction with the council seat election in the August primary election. The nomination packets are now available at the city offices and are to be turned in no sooner than May 4 and no later than June 3, with 10 signatures required before submitting the paperwork.
As the process for recall, Mayor Merrill Young’s name will automatically appear on the ballot unless he requests in writing that it not be included. In addition, any other eligible candidate’s name will appear on the ballot and the candidate who receives the largest number of votes is declared elected for the remainder of the unexpired term on candidate’s qualification for the office and on completion of the canvass. If the incumbent receives the largest number of votes, the incumbent continues in office.
Sherry Reed with the Navajo County Historical Society notified the council that the Navajo County Courthouse Museum will be having a reception at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, for the retirement of JoLynn Fox as well as the society’s annual board meeting. The meeting will be held in the museum’s Route 66 Auditorium.
The council also heard the Arizona Public Service (APS) Wildfire Mitigation report from Northeast Arizona Community Affairs Manager Janet Dean and Division Manager Neil Traver. Dean explained that APS has worked with fire departments, the Forest Service, and county emergency managements to prepare for fire season in Arizona. APS has also implemented new equipment to improve fire safety on their machinery.
City Manager Ted Soltis informed the council that the transfer station is now open on Fridays. He also attended the Economic Development Council meeting which discussed various topics. “We installed new picnic tables in Hunt Park underneath the pavilion and relocated some to the animal shelter.” He also added the new Hunt Park bleachers are being built and will soon be put up. The concession stands at Lizitsky Park are nearly complete as well.
The sole action taken by council was to proclaim April as Fair Housing Month.
