As the holiday season unfolds in both Winslow and Holbrook, our communities are coming together to celebrate with a variety of heartwarming events. These local initiatives, aimed at spreading joy and offering support, provide opportunities for everyone to join in the festive spirit. From meaningful fundraisers to generous toy drives, these events exemplify the community’s unity and generosity.
The Holbrook Senior Citizen’s Center is actively engaged in distributing food boxes to seniors in need. To access this valuable service, individuals are encouraged to sign up promptly. The distribution of these food boxes is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, Furthermore, they are actively seeking volunteers to assist with this effort. Those interested in volunteering should plan to arrive at 7 a.m. on Dec. 23. The senior center anticipates providing between 120 to 130 boxes during this distribution.
Mike Nilsson, president of the senior center board, emphasized that this initiative aims to address the prevalent issue of food insecurity affecting many families in our community. These boxes contain essential items, including ham, potatoes, stuffing, and a complete holiday meal, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a hearty meal during the holiday season. Nilsson stated, “No one should have to go hungry, especially during the holiday season.”
In another heartwarming collaboration, the Holbrook Elks and Mason lodges have come together for their annual Clothe a Child event, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the community. On Dec. 16, they are organizing a special trip to the Winslow Walmart, where they will purchase clothing for 45 students to help them stay warm throughout the winter. Each student will receive a coat, shoes, and a complete outfit. Following this shopping excursion, the students will be brought back to the Elks lodge in Holbrook, where they will receive special treats and have the opportunity to meet Santa Claus.
In addition to the Clothe a Child event, the Holbrook Elks are also preparing hot Christmas meals to be served on Dec. 25. These meals are intended for individuals who may not otherwise have access to a Christmas meal. They plan to distribute approximately 100 meals and are actively seeking volunteers to assist with this generous effort. Those interested in volunteering can simply show up at 8 a.m. at the Holbrook Elks Lodge or contact Cindy Allen at 928-241-1796 for more information.
Meanwhile, in Winslow, the “Because We Care” organization is hosting a Holiday Gift Wrapping Fundraiser from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesdays, Dec. 12 and Dec. 19, at the Girl Scout House. This event supports a significant cause, as donations will contribute to hosting a safe post-graduation party for Winslow High School’s 2024 graduates, with the aim of preventing drinking and driving. It’s a perfect blend of holiday cheer and community care, inviting residents to have their gifts wrapped while supporting the safety and well-being of local students.
Adding to Winslow’s festive atmosphere, the Winslow Beautification Committee is offering assistance to residents looking to decorate their homes for Christmas. Recognizing the joy and occasional challenges of outdoor decorating, they extend their services to help set up holiday decorations. Those interested can reach out to Kayla Weishan at 928-587-4402 or contact the committee via email at BeautifyWinslowWBC@hotmail.com. Additionally, updates and information can be found on their Facebook page: Winslow AZ Beautification Committee. This initiative not only beautifies the community but also fosters a spirit of collaboration and holiday cheer across Winslow.
This holiday season in Winslow, two heartwarming toy drives are in full swing, each aimed at bringing joy to children in need. First, Winslow Junior High School, in partnership with Winslow High School and Winslow Police Department, is hosting a Christmas Toy Drive. Focused on supporting local children currently in foster care, they are accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys through Dec. 13 at the WJHS office. These gifts will brighten the holidays for children in the Northern Arizona Foster Kid Program.
Simultaneously, FadezByJ Barbershop is conducting their annual Christmas Toy Drive, running from now through Dec. 21. This drive, supported by generous sponsors like Dough Mama, M&J Smoke Shop, ASTA Roofing and Construction, LLC, House of Tint, Matthew Wilkie, and Snap Fitness Winslow, has established multiple drop-off locations across the community to facilitate the donation process. These efforts will culminate in a special celebration on Dec. 22, featuring hot chocolate from Dough Mama, music by DJ Chip, and a surprise guest appearance to thank the community for their contributions.
Both initiatives underscore the community’s dedication to sharing the holiday spirit with those facing challenges. For more information or to get involved with the FadezByJ Barbershop’s toy drive, interested parties can contact 480-532-9396 or jalen@thefadezbyj.com.
