The Navajo County Community College District Governing Board renewed the lease for the automotive technology training facility in the Show Low Industrial Park for another five years during a special teleconference meeting held July 22.

The new lease reduces the monthly rate for the 12,000-square-foot facility, leased from Mountain Oaks Development, by nearly one-third. Used exclusively by the automotive program, the operational costs are split equally with the Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology (NAVIT).

In other action, the board authorized the engineering, purchase and installation of upgrades to Northland Pioneer College’s telecommunications Eagle Network. The upgrades, to be installed by Next Level Solutions, will improve bandwidth between the Show Low and Holbrook campuses, and replace equipment nearing the end of its useful life.

The links between the tower at the former Hermosa campus in Holbrook to Dry Lake and then back to Show Low are the foundational backbone of the college’s data, phone and video network. The college has been experiencing congestion due to narrow bandwidth, explained NPC Information Services Director Eric Bishop. Adding bandwidth along this “highway” will relieve some of the congestion and improve video quality for NPC students in classes taught over the network.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, in the Tiponi Community Center on the Holbrook-Painted Desert Campus, 2251 E. Navajo Blvd.
