Area prep athletes are tuning up for the state basketball tournaments, which opened this week. Winslow’s Shandiin Armao (top photo), one of the top female players in the state, led her team to victory in the sectional tournament and will be a driving force when the No. 3 Lady Bulldogs open state tourney play on Saturday, Feb. 21, after enjoying a first round bye. The Holbrook Roadrunners, including (bottom photo, left to right) Abrian Dickson, Sylas Chevarillo, Marlin Martin and Coach Delmar Johnson, are seeded ninth and have been busy preparing for Tuesday night’s first round game with Monument Valley. The No. 7 Lady Roadrunners drew a first round bye and will see their first action on Saturday. The Bulldogs also made the state tournament, as did Joseph City’s No. 24 Lady Wildcats, who will face No. 9 Scottsdale Prep on Friday, Feb. 20.
