A high-speed chase through Holbrook on Thursday, Sept. 25, had residents uncertain of what was happening as a black motorcycle pursued by several law enforcement units raced through the town. The pursuit began at around 9:30 a.m. on State Route 77 at the 377 junction south of Holbrook when a black street bike travelling northbound at an estimated speed of 100 mph was nearly involved in a collision. Shortly after, a Department of Public Safety officer observed the suspect travel through a construction zone with a lane closure at 105 mph. DPS units and a Navajo County Sheriff’s unit pursued the motorcycle as it travelled north on Navajo Blvd. at speeds exceeding 100 mph and entered Interstate 40 traveling east. The law enforcement officers pursued the motorcycle onto the interstate as the suspect vehicle reached speeds of 130 mph. About 32 miles east of Holbrook the DPS supervisor ordered the pursuit to be terminated due to public safety concerns, including the excessive speed of the suspect vehicle. The motorcycle description was passed onto the New Mexico State Police in Gallup. DPS was not informed if the vehicle was ever apprehended. The motorcycle was believed to have an unknown Colorado license plate.
