Preserving the past is not free. Archival equipment, shelving, computers and manpower are all needed to record and store the pictures, documents and items that tell the tale of our history.
That is one reason the Navajo County Historical Society is holding a membership drive. Funds raised from the drive will be used to help archive records and maintain displays at the historic courthouse in downtown Holbrook. Board members are also hoping the drive will bring more community involvement and volunteers to assist in the massive undertaking of sorting, cataloging and storing more than 100 years worth of county history.
Last year, the society had a long list of accomplishments, and members hope to do even more this year. New shelving for the newspaper collection, which spans back to the late 1800s, was installed. Archival boxes for photographs and documents were purchased, and an inventory was completed.
A major ongoing project includes creating a digital archive and a master digital list of documents, such as maps, posters and magazines. Updating the inventory of certain stored items is also planned this year, as well as computer upgrades.
In addition to seeking new members, the historical society is also asking community members to consider loaning items for short-term displays. In recent months, the society has received an antique showcase, original desks from Sheldon School, a roll of wrapping paper from Schuster’s, a ditto mimeograph machine and a West Point cadet uniform. Apache Crown Dance ceremonial items were also donated, but were given in turn to the White Mountain Apache Tribe since they were religious items.
Annual support membership is tax deductible. The historical society notes that the dues pay for new displays, collection of items, preservation of historical items, research, library resources, and repairs and improvements to the museum at the historic courthouse. Membership collections also provide the society with funds necessary to obtain grants that require matching funds.
Annual membership starts at $10 for an individual or $35 for a family.
