The Gemini Art Gallery is hosting The Mother Road Art Show. Owner and curator Linda Card said that the show will feature art that showcases life along Route 66. The weekend will also mark the Gemini Gallery’s first anniversary. Card explained the desire to celebrate the anniversary as well as celebrated the small-town life that was once a prominent feature along Route 66. “I’m a small-town girl,” Card said, “and its not just the nostalgia of Route 66, it’s that it wound through little places with real people, mom and pop stuff. That sort of thing excites me.”
Card invited all of the artists in her gallery to do a piece for the show. Each piece will highlight the various aspects of Route 66 culture.
According to Card, that includes Native American and Hispanic aspects as well as the iconic Route 66 car culture. “John Vasquez did a piece for the show that I think is very thought provoking,” said Card. The painting features a small child in front of a classic American car in the early 1960s. “These were the cars that owned the road, especially Route 66.”
Other entries include cast iron sculptures, watercolors, and photographs. The Mother Road Art Show begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug.10, at the gallery located at 210 N. Kinsley Ave. in Winslow. As part of the show, Card will also host a sock hop that is free and open to the public beginning at 5 p.m. in front of the gallery on Kinsley Avenue.
