Area residents will have one more opportunity to provide their input on the redistricting options that are being proposed for the Navajo County Supervisorial Districts and Navajo County Community College District Precincts. Redistricting Committee Chairman Marlin Gillespie will conduct the meeting scheduled at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the Navajo County Board of Supervisors chambers, located in the county governmental center at 100 E. Code Talkers Drive in Holbrook.

Gillespie will answer any questions regarding redistricting, as well as accept any new maps for consideration. There are maps currently available for review and new maps can be created by going to http://www.navajocountyaz.gov/bos/redistricting/.

“We are hoping to come out of that meeting with one or two maps that we can present to the Board of Supervisors for consideration,” he explained. According to Gillespie, the Navajo Nation is expected to present one or two maps for consideration on or before Nov. 8.

Redistricting takes place when census results indicate that population changes warrant a change in district and precinct borders. When drawing up possible redistricting maps, things to be considered are that the new districts must have equal population, must not discriminate as prohibited by federal law, must be created by using existing election precincts and the new districts must be contiguous.

The Board of Supervisors has rescheduled its regular meetings in November to Nov. 15 and 29 in order to allow time for consideration of the maps to be presented.

Once a map selection has been approved by the Board of Supervisors, it then goes on to the U.S. Department of Justice for review.
