With the Christmas break winding down for each of the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, most have logged nearly half of their games.
While some teams still have a holiday tournament Holbrook, Winslow and Snowflake girls, for example, the others have put two tournaments in the books and look ahead to the grueling January and February region schedules.
Holbrook’s boys’ team has an overall record of 12-4 and they are 5-1 in power point contests. The Roadrunners have played both of their tournaments, having won the Round Valley Tournament in mid-December. The Roadrunners will return to action on Saturday when they host American Leadership Academy-Queen Creek with a 4 p.m. tip for the varsity contest.
The Lady Roadrunners have compiled an 8-4 overall mark but they are just 2-4 in power point contests. Like the boys’ team the Ladies won the Round Valley tournament. They will be participating in the 80 team Chandler Prep tournament beginning on Thursday. Holbrook is the two-time defending champion of this highly competitive tournament but the team has a lot of work to do as they try to return to last year’s level of play. Holbrook opens play in the Diamond Bracket on Thursday vs Florence at 2:30 p.m. The Ladies will return to regular season action on Jan. 8 when they open East Region play by hosting Blue Ridge.
Snowflake’s boys’ team is 9-7 overall and 4-1 in power point contests. They will return to action on Jan. 9 when they travel to Alchesay.
The Lady Lobos are 7-3 overall and 3-2 in power point contests. They will be playing in the platinum division of the Chandler Prep Tournament and will face Mogollon in the first round at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening. The Lobos will return to regular season action on Jan. 9 when they make the trip to Whiteriver.
Winslow’s boys’ team has the best overall record of the local teams as they sit with a record of 13-4. Like Holbrook, they are 5-1 in power point contests. They will host American Leadership Academy-Queen Creek on Friday, the night before Holbrook plays the same team on Saturday. Winslow will host Tuba City on Jan. 9.
The Lady Bulldogs will join Holbrook in the diamond bracket of the Chandler Prep Tournament beginning on Thursday when they face Rio Rico at 7 p.m. The team is 6-5 overall and like Holbrook they are just 2-4 in power point contests but they have played a difficult schedule early on. Following the tournament, they will host Tuba City on Jan. 9.
The Joseph City’s boys’ team is off to a stellar beginning. The Wildcats are 12-2 overall and 5-1 in regular season contests. They will travel to Mogollon on Jan. 7. They just had their 12-game winning streak snapped just prior to the break with a five-point home court loss to St. Johns.
The Lady Wildcats are struggling through the first half of the season. They are just 2-10 overall and 1-4 in regular season contests. They will return to action on Jan. 10 when they host Ash Fork/Seligman, which is the team they defeated for the only power point win thus far.
The new 3A and 1A power point rankings won’t be released until Jan. 7. That is when all teams will know where they stand in terms of how they stack up against the rest of the teams in their respective conferences.
