thanksgiving dinner

With the holidays quickly approaching, the Bread of Life Mission in Holbrook has begun preparations for their annual Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners open to all members of the community.

Last year, the Bread of Life Mission, which serves those in need throughout Navajo County, invited anyone in need of a holiday dinner or companionship to join them at their establishment at 885 Hermosa Drive where more than 200 members of the Holbrook community attended. This year will be no different.

Executive Director Cherise Myers says she hopes to provide the same support to just as many people if not more during this holiday season. “The holidays are probably the loneliest and really get hard, people get more depressed because they just don’t want to be alone. We want them to feel welcome,” said Myers.

Currently, the Bread of Life Mission is still in need of all varieties of holiday dinner dishes such as turkeys, mashed potatoes, stuffing, desserts, drinks and cutlery for the events. Myers explained that these events are made possible by donations and the mission has received great support from the Holbrook community.

Although, the immediate goal is to accommodate the holiday dinners, she explained that help is needed year-round. Myers said that the mission serves thousands of meals a year but the traffic increases in the colder months and especially during the holidays. With many seeking shelter from the harsh weather, the mission often finds itself in need of extra food and bedding. “We end up with so many people, some end up sleeping on mats on the floors.”

The director said anything helps and they will accept donations of all kinds. Perishable and non-perishable foods are welcomed. Even prepared food left over from events will be accepted. To donate, contact the mission at (928) 524-3874 or at 885 Hermosa Drive.

Also providing hot meals to those in need this Thanksgiving is the Desert View Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church who have teamed up to host a free lunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Desert View Church, located at 101 Hipkoe Drive in Winslow.
