In today’s hectic world, it’s easy to forget to appreciate the unfiltered and natural beauty the earth so generously offers. But for Holbrook resident and artist Sue Dixson, she makes it a point to do just the opposite.

When she’s not greeting customers with her contagious laugh and spunky personality at Circle K where she is well known, she’s creating works of art using landscapes as her focal point.

Born and raised in Nebraska, Dixson moved to Holbrook in 1981, where she finished high school. In her early childhood Dixson had little interest in painting. “I never really painted before. I didn’t know I could paint,” said Dixson when asked if her talent was something she carried from her youth.

In her junior year in high school she took a trip to Sedona with her family and at some point was given paints, a canvas and a brush. “I just sat down and started painting.” The painting was of Oak Creek Canyon. Despite the results being “very good” according to Dixson, she didn’t immediately pursue painting after that. “It wasn’t until my senior year that I decided to join a contest and paint again,” said Dixson. She won the contest with her painting of the Swiss Alps but this time decided she would continue to explore her new-found talent.

Since then, Dixson has evolved into a talented artist well-known by locals and around Arizona, having shipped some of her work as far as Iowa, Dixson’s had a fairly broad ground of exposure for her work.

Though Dixson has had no trouble selling her work, she is only now beginning to market it. Dixson said she is not very tech savvy and that was the reason she’s started displaying her paintings at local events. “That’s why I went to the Old West Fest, I’m hoping it will get my name out there a little more.”

The artist does sell her work through her Facebook account but is seeking to broaden her outreach with perhaps a website and other media outlets.

While Dixson enjoys the benefits of drawing nature’s gifts finding it peaceful to paint the landscapes, she said she’s also gifted many of her paintings to friends, colleagues and even doctors over the years as her talent evolves. “I just enjoy it. I’m trying new things. I’ve always painted with acrylic and have just started playing with watercolors and a few other things.” Something she looks forward to sharing as she progresses.
