Snowflake started the year with a pair of losses sandwiched around a win over Safford on Thursday. Tuesday they were in Alchesay where they fell to a good Falcon team 66-62 in overtime in front of a large crowd.

The Falcons took a 3-point lead into the second and extended that margin to 33-23 at the half. The Lobos trimmed one off the lead in the third, then made a run in the fourth, outscoring the Falcons 19-10 to force overtime. In the extra session Alchesay outscored Snowflake 14-10 to secure the 4-point region win.

Thursday night the team bounced back with a comfortable 63-48 win over visiting Safford.

On Friday they were in Holbrook for a rematch with the Roadrunners. Snowflake won the first match up with the Birds 62-40 right before the holiday break.

This game was close until the final seconds. Holbrook led 15-12 through the first eight minutes with Jhett Udall netting 4 for the Lobos. In the second, Landon Clare and Jaron Woodside helped Snowflake keep pace with a hot shooting Holbrook team, which lead 33-26 at the half.

In the third, both teams struggled to score matching the other with 7 points in the eight minutes and leaving Snowflake still trailing by 40-33 going into the fourth. In the final quarter Snowflake battled back behind Clare who scored all but 3 of the Lobo points in the fourth. He netted 11 points giving his team a brief lead with 11 seconds left in the game.

Holbrook forced an errant Lobo inbound pass which resulted in a go-ahead Holbrook lay-up with seven seconds left. Snowflake had a final chance to secure the win when Holbrook was called for an intentional foul with a 48-47 lead. Snowflake unfortunately missed both free throws, then also missed a short shot in the key as the clock ran out, preserving the 48-47 win for Holbrook.

Clare led all scorers with 19 points. Woodside added 9; Udall, 6; Gionn Jones, 6; Liam Brewer, 2; and Braden Westover added 2. Snowflake made just four of eight free throws in the 1-point loss.

The Lobos head into this week’s action with an overall record of 7-7. They are 4-4 in regular season games. The 3A power points will be released on Tuesday this week, letting all schools know where they stand with just over three weeks left in the regular season.

This week Snowflake will host Alchesay on Tuesday, then travel to face the always difficult Valley Christian on Wednesday. Next Tuesday they will play at Winslow.
