Snowflake’s boys soccer team came about as close to a state championship as you can come without actually getting it.
The Lobos entered the 2A fall soccer bracket as the fifth overall seed. The team traveled to Willcox on Tuesday evening and came home with a 3 to 2 win over the fourth-seeded Cowboys. That win advanced them to the semifinal round on Halloween night where they were on the road once again, this time to Chino Valley to face the top-seeded Cougars. Snowflake battled through overtime and a 1-1 tie before outlasting the top seed 1-0 on penalty kicks to advance to the championship game.
In the title game played on Saturday, they again fought to an overtime outcome with second-seeded Madison Highland. The score was knotted at 2-2 following overtime and the Lobos came up just one goal short losing 6-7 on penalty kicks in a thriller of an outcome.
Snowflake finished the season as the state runner-up which is impressive considering the path they had to take through the bracket.
Snowflake’s girls team entered the play-in bracket as the fourth seed and dispatched fifth seeded Blue Ridge 4-1 on Tuesday night at Lobo Stadium. That win put them into the semi-finals of the state bracket where their season came to a close in Show Low at the hands of the eventual state-runner-up Cougars on Halloween night. The Cougars ended Snowflake’s season with a 4-1 outcome.
