By Greg Perkins The Snowflake football team dropped their first game of the season on Aug. 27, but since that loss they have outscored their last two opponents by a combined 98-6, including Friday’s 46-6 win over visiting Fountain Hills. Sam Crockett put the Lobos on the board on their opening drive with a 32-yard field goal in the first two minutes of the game. The Lobos defense had the bend but don’t not break mentality on Fountain Hills’ first drive, allowing the Falcons to move all the way down inside Snowflake’s 20 yard line before a missed field goal left the Lobos on top 3-0. Near the three minute mark of the first period Snowflake found the endzone for the first time when Caden Cantrell hooked up with JJ Lerman for a 15 yard scoring strike. Crockett’s point after gave the Lobos a 10-0 lead. After the Lobo defense held the Falcons to three and out, Camden Brimhall returned the ensuing punt 57 yards for pay dirt, pushing the lead to 17-0 at the end of the quarter. Jace LeSueur picked off a Falcon pass attempt on their next drive giving the Lobos the ball on their own 37-yard line. Cantrell then ran all the way to the one yard line but fumbled the ball in the endzone resulting in a touchback which gave Fountain Hills the ball on their own 20 yard line. The Lobo defense again held and Cantrell hooked up with Noah Baum for a 10-yard scoring toss pushing the lead to 23-0 with six minutes left in the half. Brimhall pushed the lead to 30-0 late in the half with a short four-yard scoring run. Following a short 24-yard field goal in the third, Cantrell and Lerma hooked up for the second time, this scoring pass coming from 21 yards out pushing the lead to 39-0 with four minutes left in the third. Brimhall added another short touchdown run in the fourth and Crockett booted through the 46th Lobo point midway through the fourth. Fountain Hills avoided the shut out with a short touchdown pass in the final two minutes of the game. Leaving Snowflake with a 2-1 record after the 40-point win. Cantrell completed 8 of 16 pass attempts for 101 yards, with three touchdowns. Easton Butler was good on his only throw of the night which went for 71 yards to Baum. Baum finished with four catches on the night for 100 yards and a score. Tyler Clare had two receptions, Eduardo Guevara, Lerma and Jett McCray each had one catch. Brimhall carried 14 times, gaining 117 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Cantrell rushed for 83 yards; Jett McCray, 47; and Lerma had 33 yards. Snowflake’s defense forced five Falcon turnovers. Garret Flake, LeSueur, Cavin Caldwell and Bradden Lewis each had interceptions. Bryce White recovered a Fountain Hills fumble. This week the Lobos will open 3A east region play with a trip to Blue Ridge. Like the Lobos, the Jackets are 2-1 having won their last two games after starting the season with a loss. Their two wins, however, have been much closer games. A two touchdown win over Kingman and a two-point win over San Tan Charter on Friday are their two wins. Last season Snowflake won this match up 22-21. Expect this to be another very close game between two east region rivals, both with sights set on deep post season runs in the 3A conference.
