The Lobos fell in two region contests last week, but earned a non-conference win over St. Johns in between the two 3A East losses to Winslow and Payson.
Hosting the Bulldogs on Tuesday of last week the Lobos found themselves trailing what had been a struggling Winslow team 4-0 through the first inning and a half. Snowflake narrowed the gap with three runs in the second, but fell behind again after giving up three more in the third. Winslow moved out in front 10-4 with a three-run fifth only to see Snowflake mount a rally with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 10-8. Winslow tacked on two more in the seventh for good measure to win the game 12-8.
The Lobos scored eight runs on eight hits and made three errors.
Winslow pushed in 12 runs on 16 hits and made just one error to get the win.
Hosting St. Johns on Wednesday afternoon the Lobos had little trouble bouncing back from the loss. Snowflake controlled the game throughout, picking up the 11-1 win.
Playing at the Salt River Field at Talking Stick against top ranked Payson on Friday it looked as if the Lobos had a chance to upset the number one team. Snowflake scored twice each the second, third and fourth innings to lead the Longhorns 6-1.
Payson began its comeback with three runs in the fifth, then pulled ahead for good with a five-run sixth inning to wipe away any upset bid by the Lobos and keep their top ranking in place with the 9-7 win.
Snowflake scored seven runs on 12 hits and made three errors.
Payson countered with nine runs on 10 hits and made two errors.
With the two losses the Lobos’ regular season record dropped to 8-6, leaving them ranked ninth in power points at the onset of this week. Just four games remain on their schedule as they head toward the post-season. After playing at Holbrook on Tuesday, they will travel to Round Valley today (April 19), then host Show Low on Friday. On Monday they put a wrap on the regular season with a trip to Blue Ridge.
Snowflake will be in the state playoffs, but when and where won’t be determined until next week.
