For the second time this season the Lobos beat rival Show Low by 1 run on Tuesday evening in Show Low. The Cougars remain ranked above the Lobos in the 3A rankings, but Snowflake does have the bragging rights as well as the upper hand in the region standings thanks to their 9-8 come from behind win.
Show Low broke the ice with a run in the second only to be matched by Snowflake in the top of the third. The Cougars moved back in front with 3 in the home half of the third, then added 4 more in the fourth making the score 8-3 at that point. Snowflake battled back. They made it an 8-7 game with 4 runs in the fifth, then following a scoreless sixth inning, the Lobos moved in front with 2 in the top of the ninth. They held Show Low off the board in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 1-run win.
Kloe Burden went 3 for 4, including a 3-run home run. Paisley Solomon matched that 3-run homer with a 1 for 4-day at the plate. Kesley Scarbrough went 2 for 4 with a double. Kashlynn Cantrell was 1 for 4; Brooklyn Lovingood, 1 for 3; Addie Coor, 2 for 4; and Riley Perkins went 1 for 3.
Cantrell worked all seven innings allowing 8 runs on 11 hits with 9 strikeouts and walked 5 Cougar batters.
Things were much easier on Thursday when the Lobos crushed Chinle on the road 20-1 in five short innings. Snowflake did start rather slow with just 2 in the first and 3 in the second, but they woke up with 6 runs in the fourth inning, then put the game away scoring 9 runs in the fifth.
Cantrell went 3 for 5 with a triple and a double. Kinslee Claridge was 2 for 4; and Scarbrough, 4 for 5 with two doubles. Lovingood, 2 for 5; Coor, 3 for 5; Solomon, 2 for 4; Brodie Cates, 1 for 2; and Brittyn Butler went 2 for 3.
Solomon pitched five innings allowing just 1 run on 7 hits with 8 strikeouts and walked only one Wildcat batter.
This week the Lobos will play at Holbrook on Monday, then travel to Alchesay on Tuesday. Thursday, they host Blue Ridge, then will end their regular season at Winslow the following Monday.
Snowflake was ranked eighth heading into this week. If they can remain in that position or climb higher, they would receive a first round bye in the upcoming state playoffs.
The Lobos were 11-3 heading into Monday’s game at Holbrook.
