By Greg Perkins Catching up with the Lobo soccer team finds them with a pair of wins against just one loss heading into this week’s action. Snowflake opened the season with a 4-2 win over a good Northland Prep team on Aug. 28. With an assist from Alan Pozos, Adrean Begay scored the first goal of the match and the season for the Lobos. Just three min-utes later Dustin Shumway added another. Late in the first half Kegan Kay found the net, firing a low liner from 30 yards out. Just before the half Northland Prep scored, leaving the Lobos with a 3-1 halftime edge. In the second, Northland trimmed the lead to one early in the half only to see Begay pick up his second goal, bouncing one off the post to give the Lobos the two-goal win. Two days later Snowflake traveled to Holbrook, where the Lobos outlasted the Roadrunners, winning the match in the closing minutes 3-2. Pozos scored first off an assist from Landon Godfrey. Holbrook then earned a penalty kick, but goalie Allan Perkins made a diving save. Later in the first half Holbrook caught and passed the Lobos, scoring on two longer goals. Still trailing by a goal with under 10 minutes left in the match, Pozos scored off a throw in by Shumway, knotting the match at 2-2. With less than four minutes remaining, Everett Lunt scored on a follow up shot which had bounced off Holbrook’s goalie after Shumway’s shot attempt was blocked. Shumway scored again at the final buzzer, but the goal was waived by the officials due to time expiring. In their third game the Lobos ran up against a tough Blue Ridge squad and were shut out 2-0. The Lobos played well defensively, but Blue Ridge scored in the late stages of both halves to get the win. Perkins had nine saves in the match. “We aren’t yet where we would like to be. After playing Blue Ridge and taking note of their game speed and ability to control the field, it demonstrates that they are probably the team to beat again this year. I do feel they can be beaten, but the team that does it is going to have to play a perfect game,” said Coach Brian Weir. “We have our work cut out for us, but I think the Snowflake team is ready for that challenge and will be able to give them a better challenge in three weeks. “Overall, we are off to a great start and are on par with our last three seasons. I have many inexperienced players that are first time players who are working hard to be their best. Players to watch this year include Alan Pozos, Dustin Shumway, Dallin Hastings, Kegan Kay, Everett Lunt, and Adrean Begay.”
