January has not been particularly kind to the Lobos who have put up only two wins against five losses. Two of those losses came last week with a 60-75 setback against Winslow on Tuesday followed by a 69-80 loss at Blue Ridge on Friday.

Scoring points hasn’t been a problem in their past two games, but defensively they gave up over 75 to both the Bulldogs and the Yellowjackets, who are two of the three highest ranked East Region teams, with Winslow ranked sixth and Blue Ridge sitting one position behind Holbrook in 13th place.

The Jan. 22 game with visiting Winslow was a close contest until late in the third. Snowflake was within three points but in the fourth the defending state champs pulled away outscoring Snowflake by six in the final period.

Facing a high octane Blue Ridge offense on Friday night, the Lobos started well leading early and forced a close game at the half. In the third period, Blue Ridge opened up a double-digit lead and they were able to hold the Lobos at bay the rest of the way to secure the 11- point win.

With the two losses the Lobos had their regular season mark fall to 5-9. They were ranked 21st in the rankings prior to Friday’s Blue Ridge contest. The Lobos need to stay inside the top 24 in the overall rankings over the course of their final four games in order to make the state tournament. After playing in Payson last night they will host Holbrook on Friday in what will be their final home game of the year.
