basketball Snow

Head boys Coach Joe Clare enters his second year as the Lobo coach. Last season Snowflake went 15-4 in the regular season before losing in the second round of the 3A State tournament to ALA-Ironwood.

Eight seniors were on that squad and while this year’s varsity roster is not yet set, Snowflake always has plenty of bodies to choose from each season. They do get a late start to the season with the football team traditionally playing later in the year. This year with football finishing up early, the team will have had more time to prepare for their first game which is Nov. 28, when they travel to Alchesay. Following that they will host Safford on Dec. 6, then play in the Pepsi Tournament in Flagstaff beginning Dec. 7.

The Lady Lobos enter this season as the clear favorite to win the east region title. With the loss of just one junior off last year’s team, which tied with Show Low for the region crown, the Lobos have a senior laden team this year with a full complement of size, speed and power. Their varsity roster isn’t yet settled with their volleyball team winning state this year, a large majority of which play basketball they are still working out the overall lineup.

Head Coach Mike Brogan begins his second year at the helm and will look to improve on last season’s 9-9 regular season mark. Snowflake did advance to the quarterfinal round of the state tournament before bowing out to eventual state champion Alchesay.

This season Snowflake should be built for an even deeper state tournament run.

They open the campaign early this week with play in the Inferno Invitational tournament hosted by Palo Verde High School. The Lobos will have faced Flowing Wells, and Coolidge on Monday, then will advance to bracket play on Tuesday.

Their first regular season game will be at Alchesay on Nov. 28. The first home game will be on Dec. 6, when Safford makes a visit.
