The Lady Lobos should be stacked this season with size, athleticism and a new head coach. With previous coach Joe Clare moving over to head up the boys team, former Show Low Coach Mike Brogan brings his coaching prowess to the Lobo sideline. The Lobos are heavily favored to win the east region, although Winslow may give them a challenge.
Snowflake opened the season with four games played at the Inferno Invitational tournament hosted by Sunnyside High School in Tucson. They went 2-2 in those four games with three of the four played against bigger schools.
The Lobos opened the tourney with a 45-20 loss to eventual tournament champion 4A Poston Butte early Tuesday afternoon. Later that evening they took care of 3A Coolidge 53-18. Playing on Wednesday afternoon they faced 6A Sunnyside and battled the bigger school to a 10-point loss at 49-39. Their final game of the tournament was a win over another 6A opponent.
Rincon/University was the opponent in the low scoring 29-21 Lobo win.
This week Snowflake will host a talented and defending 3A state champion Alchesay team on Tuesday. The Falcons are quick and move the ball well. The Lobos are fast and much bigger. Next Tuesday Snowflake will travel to face Safford.
They will then have nine days off before returning to the court on Dec. 15 against the Lady Elks in Round Valley. Snowflake’s second tournament this year will be at the Lady Longhorn Winter Stampeded held in Payson on Dec. 16 and 17.
They will open east region play on Dec. 20 with a huge early season match-up with the Bulldogs in Winslow.
