The Lady Roadrunners of Holbrook pulled off the biggest upset of the Division IV State Volleyball Tournament in the opening round to reach the quarterfinals, but that’s where their season came to a close on Friday night at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott.
Entering the playoffs as the 15th seed Holbrook met up with second ranked Willcox and took down the Lady Cowgirls in four games. Both teams battled to gain the upper hand in the first game, which the Lady Birds eventually won 27-25. Willcox fought back to claim game two, 25-19, only to see Holbrook pick up the momentum and win game three 25-16. The Lady Roadrunners, who entered the tournament playing well, closed out Willcox’s season with a solid 25-17 win in game four.
In the quarterfinal round on Friday evening, the Lady Roadrunners met up with Valley Christian, the 10th seed, which had also advanced with a bit of an upset over seventh seeded Parker. The Holbrook squad played hard and came within a few points of pulling its second straight upset in a thrilling match. The Lady Birds fell in the first game, 25-23, then pushed the 10th seed to extended points before falling 30-28 in game two. The third game again went to extra points before the Lady Birds’ season came to a close with a 26-24 loss in game three.
Holbrook wrapped up the season with a 9-10 record, not including tournament matches. Valley Christian went on to lose to eventual champion Northwest Christian in the next round.
