The Lady Roadrunners were busy last week with two regular season volleyball games during the week, followed by multiple contests at the “Be Like Nat” tournament held in Snowflake over the weekend.
Hosting Winslow on Tuesday night, the Birds fell in three straight games to the rival Bulldogs. Winslow took the first game 25-17, won the second 25-22 and closed out the match by taking game three 25-17. Winslow’s Tayela Larsen, Tamia Haskie and Lisa Tsosie combined for 23 of the team’s kills, with the Dawgs taking care of business at the net. Holbrook played hard defense and is a scrappy team, but Winslow had a little too much offensive firepower.
Thursday night, a tall Blue Ridge team made a visit to Munoz Gym and left for home with a 3-1 win. All four games of the match were fairly close, with Holbrook forcing many long volleys, but in the end the Jackets prevailed, handing the Lady Birds their sixth regular season loss with only one win.
Over the weekend Holbrook was in Snowflake for two days of tournament action. Friday’s pool play saw the team go 0-4 in pool play. They lost to Pima 1-2, Payson 0-2, St. Johns 0-2 and Mesquite 0-2. Holbrook returned on Saturday for bracket play where they fell to Blue Ridge 0-2, defeated Sabino 2-0, then ended the tournament with a 1-2 loss to St. Johns.
This week the team will host Show Low on Tuesday, then travel to Joseph City for a 3 p.m. varsity start time on Saturday. Next Tuesday they travel to face St. Johns followed by a home bout with Snowflake the following day.
