After a first half struggle the Lady Roadrunners put together a solid third quarter and eventually turned a one point half-time lead into a 12 point cushion heading into the final stanza at Alchesay on Tuesday evening. Holbrook went on to win the game 60-44 improving their regular season mark to 3-0. Elena Smith got things started on Holbrook’s first possession of the game with a long range three. Tyler Pacheco played well in the opening frame as well netting six of her team high 15, helping the Birds to a three-point cushion heading to the second quarter. Holbrook collected three-point shots from Smith, Pacheco and Tyanna Johnson in the second, but it still wasn’t enough to keep the Lady Falcons from making a two minute run right before half which erased a 10-point Holbrook margin heading to the break with the Birds clinging to a 26-25 lead. The third period was the turning point. Holbrook adjusted their defense and outscored the Falcons 16-5 in the eight-minute stretch. Johnson scored seven in the period and Rayanna Wauneka stepped up her game as well netting five. In the final quarter Holbrook had their highest scoring period of the game without a three-point field goal. Smith hit three two-point field goals, and Madison Chappell added four to her total helping Holbrook move to 6-2 overall on the season. “We started well enough early, but late in the second we let them play their style of basketball, which we knew would be a problem for us. Coming out of the half the girls did a good job on the defensive end getting us some easy scoring opportunities,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. “We still missed several scoring chances in the paint from different girls. Those shots will be needed on Tuesday against Chinle. This year’s team has enough solid players, that so far we have had different girls step up, when others have struggled. “We have a veteran group for the most part and it is good to know when we play as a team we can compete. Tonight, I thought Tyler, Rayanna and Tyanna really helped us on the scoring end. Defensively Madison and Twyla created several turnovers, which led to easy points. Bottom line is we were able to get a good road win in a very tough place to play,” stated Perkins. Pacheco led the team in scoring with 15 points. Elena Smith and Tyanna Johnson had 12 each. Madison Chappell finished with 9; Wauneka, 5; Tristen Ambrose, 3; Twyla Clark, 2; and Matehya Aberle added two. Holbrook made seven three-point field goals and went five for nine at the line. The Falcons finished with three treys and converted six of 10 charity tosses. Holbrook hosted Chinle on Tuesday night and welcome in Blue Ridge on Friday, Dec. 15. Their final game prior to the Christmas break will be at Monument Valley on Dec. 20.
