Holbrook won both games played over the weekend moving their overall season record to 19-6. Hosting Monument Valley on Friday night, the home team got six points from Matehya Aberle in the first period but still trailed the Mustangs by two. In the second, Holbrook found the range from the outside. Alyssa Yazzie, Desirae Bain, and Mika Joe all made treys, helping the team outscore Monument by 10 and take a 26-18 lead into the half. Talynn Spencer scored five points in the third as Holbrook increased their lead to 13, with one period left. In the fourth, Holbrook handled the Mustang press and the Roadrunner defense shut down the Mustang offense holding them to just points giving the home team a 54-30 win. “I thought we played fairly well throughout the game. This was probably the most consistent game we’ve played thus far. We handled their press, we were able to get out in transition and we found Matehya in the post. Also our outside shots were working which really opens things up for us,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. Aberle led all scorers with 20 points. Chappell did her part with 8; Spencer added 6; Yazzie, 5; Bain, 5; Joe, 5; Abigayle Nez, 2; Shan Footracer, 2; and Cummings helped with 1. Holbrook made four three-point field goals and went 10 for 18 at the line. The Mustangs were led by Sheridan Curley with 11 points. They made two three-point field goals and hit four of 11 free throws. Holbrook traveled to Fountain Hills on Saturday and returned home with a 60 to 37 win. A solid offensive start led to a 21-14 first quarter lead. Holbrook’s defense clamped down in the second and third period holding the Falcons to six points in each of those periods, which gave Holbrook a 51-26 lead going into the fourth. Holbrook went on to win the game handily. “We were able to get our role players plenty of playing time especially in the second half. Madison and Matehya both got us off to a good start and we had control for most of the game. Now we need to focus on Winslow and Snowflake this week. It should be two highly competitive games,” said Coach Perkins. Aberle again led the team with her second consecutive 20-point game. Chappell added 11; Bain, 8; Footracer, 7; Cummings, 6; Joe, 3; Yazzie and Terry Nez each contributed two points. Holbrook made four treys and went 13 for 21 at the free throw line. Fountain Hills went four of nine at the line and made one three-point field goal. With the two wins the Lady Roadrunners improved their overall season record to 19-6. They are now 10-5 in power point games. Holbrook played in Winslow on Tuesday night for a rematch with the Bulldogs. On Friday Holbrook will play their final regular season home game when they welcome in a very good Snowflake team. Next week the Roadrunners wrap up the regular season with a trip to Blue Ridge on Tuesday, followed by a game against Show Low in Mogollon on Thursday.
