Hosting Snowflake on Friday night the Lady Roadrunners really struggled in the second period and found themselves trailing by four against the Lady Lobos. Tyler Pacheco scored eight first quarter points, and Madison Chappell added four as Holbrook pulled ahead 14-9 and looked in control after the first eight minutes. In the second things changed. Snowflake held the Birds to just six points, while they scored 15 to lead 24-20 at the half. Holbrook came out in the third and looked like the team they are, outscoring Snowflake 24-10 to regain control of the game. Chappell scored eight, Pacheco added five, as did Dakota Dick, and Rayanna Wauneka helped the scoring run with a trey. Wauneka added seven more in the fourth period as Holbrook pulled away to get their 21st win of the season by a final of 58-45. Chappell came one rebound short of a triple double, finishing with 18 points, 10 steals, and 9 rebounds. Pacheco added 13, Tyanna Johnson and Wauneka each scored 10 with each connecting twice from distance. Dick added five and Tristen Ambrose helped with two points. “We started ok, but in the second they used their speed and they were able to pull ahead. At halftime I just let the girls work it out and they came out of the break playing well. We knew we were the better team and in the second half we played like it,” said Coach Greg Perkins. Holbrook finished with seven three-point shots and went 11 for 18 at the line. Snowflake did not make a three-point field goal and went three for seven at the stripe. Playing in Chinle on Saturday night against the surging Wildcats who came in ranked seventh in 3A, Holbrook played well in the first, staying with one point at 14-13. Elena Smith nailed two long shots in the first and Pacheco also connected from deep. Chinle’s Stacey Begay went to work in the second period using her size to her advantage and she paced Chinle to a six-point half time lead. Johnson drained two treys in the third period but Holbrook fell behind by eight heading to the fourth. In the final stanza the Wildcats increased their lead to eventually hand Holbrook just their fifth loss of the season at 64-51. “The girls played hard but being a little short handed in the second half we ran low on energy. We didn’t take great care of the ball and when you give a team like Chinle extra chances they will take advantage. In the big picture the loss doesn’t really hurt us too much. Now our focus has to be on getting healthy first, then trying to make a deep state tournament push in a couple of weeks. I still believe these ladies can accomplish the goal they set back in October, they just need to stay together and work really hard in the next few weeks,” Coach Perkins commented. Johnson and Pacheco each led in scoring with 14 apiece. Smith added 11; Wauneka, 6, Twyla Clark, 2; Dick, 2; and Chappell added 2 before leaving the game with an injury. Holbrook fell to 21-5 on the season and they are now 13-3 in ranked games leaving them sitting fourth in the rankings when the week began. After playing at rival Winslow on Tuesday, Holbrook will close out the regular season at home on Friday night when they host Payson. The Roadrunners will host at least one and possibly two region tournament games next week then will get a first round bye in the state tournament, which gets underway in two weeks.
