Holbrook bounced back from Tuesday’s loss at Winslow and secured the east region title and the top seed in the East Region Tournament for the second consecutive year with a 59-48 home court win over Payson on senior night. The Lady Roadrunners started quickly piling up steals and turning them into quick points to lead 23-2 after the first period. From that point on Payson used their taller line up and battled Holbrook tough over the final three periods, but the first quarter advantage was enough to keep Holbrook in front by double digits throughout the rest of the game. Rayanna Wauneka and Matehya Aberle combined to score 22 first half points with Tyanna Johnson and Elena Smith each connecting from downtown. In the second half, Smith added five more as did fellow classmate Twyla Clark. Tyler Pacheco scored just three but was pivotal in running the offense throughout the contest. “We knew we had to keep the ball out of their post players hands as much as possible and early on we were successful. We didn’t take great care of the ball with 28 turnovers, but we were able to secure the region title for the second year in a row and can now try and get healthy and get back on an upswing for the state tournament,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. Wauneka and Aberle each led the team in scoring with 12 points apiece. Johnson added 9; Smith, 8; Clark, 5; Tristen Ambrose, 4; Megan Cummings, 4; Pacheco, 3; and Desirae Bain added 2. Holbrook made eight of 18 free throws and hit just three shots from distance in the win. With the win Holbrook improved their season mark to 22-6. They finished the regular season 9-1 in region play and as the top seed will host either No. 4 Snowflake, or No. 5 Show Low at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. With a win in that contest Holbrook would host the regional tournament championship game at 7 p.m. on Friday night. Region tournament games do not have any impact on overall power point rankings. Holbrook entered the weekend ranked fifth in the standings and should at least stay inside the top six in the final standings, meaning they will have a first round bye when the state tournament begins next week. Holbrook’s first state playoff game will be in the second round on Feb. 16 at a site yet to be determined. Holbrook finished the regular season with a 14-4 record in power point contests. The Roadrunners finished first in the east region with a 9-1 record. Winslow with an 8-2 record is second; Payson with 5-5 is third; Snowflake with 5-5, fourth; Show Low with 2-8, fifth; and Payson with 1-9, sixth.
