The Lady Roadrunners dropped to 0-2 after falling by two points at Window Rock on Tuesday night. Jineane Cummings got the first start of her Holbrook career and answered the call with 17 points including three long-range field goals in the first eight minutes helping to give Holbrook a 12-8 lead. In the second, the Scouts fought back with Holbrook netting just eight, six of which came from Matehya Aberle. With Madison Chappell hobbled by foul trouble for most of the game, the Roadrunners had to rely on their defense to keep them in the game. Window Rock’s best player Jana Solee took advantage and finished with a game high 18 points with six of those coming in the fourth where she made four of four free-throws. Cummings netted two more three-point field goals in the third, and Aberle scored consistently throughout the game until getting injured in the final minutes. Terry Nez picked up the scoring slack hitting two three-point field goals and Chappell came back with five minutes left in the game where she scored all five of her points helping Holbrook tie the game at 53-53. Window Rock’s Solee was fouled with 6.9 seconds left and she confidently drained both free throws giving the Scouts a two point lead. Holbrook then raced down the floor and got a shot from about two feet away, which bounced off the rim leaving the Scouts with a 55-53 win. “Disappointed that we couldn’t finish the game off at the free throw line. We have to become better at that aspect of the game. We also missed too many easy scoring opportunities in the paint. I thought Jineane did a great job with her first start, and Mateyah played well in the final three quarters before getting injured. “Madison spent most of the game in foul trouble, but I thought the girls did a good job of coming back from a 12-point deficit in the second half, mostly without Madi on the floor. We had our chances, we just didn’t capitalize on them. Overall it was a much better performance than our first game with Chinle. Now we just have to keep building and the wins will come. Obviously we have to get healthy and with Desirae Bain, and now Matehya out for some time, the other girls need to step it up. Our schedule only gets more difficult,” stated Holbrook Coach Greg Perkins. Cummings led Holbrook with 17 points, including five three-point field goals; Aberle added 16; Terry Nez, 6; Chappell, 5; Talynn Spencer, 4; Sam Billie, 3; and Shand Footracer finished with 2. Holbrook went five for 10 at the line and made eight three-point field goals. Window Rock was led by Jana Solee with 18, Robbie Talkalai had 15, and Shinezbi Telleradded, 9. The Scouts made seven three-point field goals and went 10 for 11 at the stripe. Holbrook will play at Chinle on Friday, then venture to Ganado on Tuesday.
