The Lady Roadrunners continued to struggle on both ends of the floor on Tuesday night in a 59-44 road loss at Ganado last week. Ganado’s quick guard lineup gave the Birds problems and Holbrook is still struggling to put the ball in the net, from short range, and at the free throw line. Terry Nez hit an early game three-point shot, while Madison Chappell and Tyleashia Yazzie both had traditional field goals in the first period, which ended with Ganado on top 10-7. Six different players scored in the second for the Birds but none of them had more than three points, as Ganado opened up a 29-20 halftime cushion. Any hopes Holbrook had of a comeback quickly dwindled in the third when the Hornets hit four treys and increased their cushion to 16 points. Holbrook finally outscored Ganado in the final period, by just one point, but the damage had long been done. “They out hustled us, outshot us and out worked us pretty much from the tip off. We knew about their quickness and they really didn’t do anything we didn’t anticipate. We just weren’t very good. They were better prepared, and they came ready to play, and I’m not convinced that our girls were ready to go. Now we have a six-game tournament to try and rediscover our team. We have not been good all year but we were at least competitive until tonight. That has to change,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. Sam Billie led Holbrook in scoring with 10; Shan Footracer added 8; Yazzie, 7; Chappell, 6; Talynn Spencer, 3; Mika Joe, 3; Terry Nez, 3; Abigayle Nez, 2; and Alyssa Yazzie had 2. Holbrook made six three-point field goals, three from Sam Billie, and went just six for 14 at the line. Ganado was paced by Jayla Mcintosh with 18, and Abigail Benally added 12. The Hornets connected on seven three-point field goals and converted eight of 14 free throws. With the loss, Holbrook dropped to 1-3 on the young season. Following a tournament last weekend, they will have home games vs Chino Valley on Dec. 19, and Window Rock on Dec. 20.
